The Santa Rosa Barrio is an invasion barrio consisting of 32
families. The families were driven off their farms either by the violence of the Civil War
or by a coffee worm which has destroyed their crops. The only hope was for these families
to migrate to Libano and find some sort of shelter in order to survive. Their shacks are
built on a dangerous hillside that can collapse at any given moment. A river runs through
the barrio which is used for sanitation which ends up doing great damage to the
environment. The dirt floor roof-leaking shacks are built with any scrap of wood or tin
that can be found. Many are single parent families usually headed by the mother.

Survival is the only hope for these families up until now.
We have given the barrio a great deal of hope as we are searching for a plot of land
where we can build simple yet comfortable housing. The people are very excited about the
possibilities to have running water and a toilet in the house. The housing would provide
santitaion and cooking facilities. We have located a lot where we are now investigating
the topography and stability of the earth. If all works out we will purchase the land with
funds that we have received. We then will need your help to build the 32 homes.
The government of Colombia will pay for approximately 75% of the cost. We will be in
need of approximately $1000.00 per house.
The Rotary Club of Mission Viejo, Ca USA have joined together with the Rotary Club of
Libano to help with this building project but to do this, they cannot do it alone.
Additional financial help is needed.
Imagine that for only $1000 we can build a dream home for these needy people. Imagine the
diseases that we will prevent when these children will be able to live in sanitary
conditions.
This is all possible with your help to this project

THE BARRIO
PRIMERO de MAYO
The Rotary
Club of Libano, Colombia jointly with the Rotary Club of Mission Viejo California USA are
dedicated to helping a second barrio in Libano
These photos show th condition of the homes and some of the families that live there.
They are basically one or two room shacks with dirt floors and all of the roofs are
leaking.
One Grandmother sleeps with plastic over her shabby little bed in order to keep dry during
the night. We have been having terrible rains and this has caused more problems for this
barrio. Some of the houses have a river of water running through them when it rains. [Click
on photo for full view and use back button to return to this page].
This
shows a boy who has an infected leg, but the family does not have the
resources to take him to the hospital.
We used some of the donations in order to get him treatment. We are using the
donations to rebuild the roofs and some of the walls.
The photos below show the materials
arriving and the families ready to move everything "by hand" down the hillside and to
their home. We spent all day moving the materials and as you can see it was all done by
women, children, and even the Grandmother helped out where she could.
We (Rotary Club of Libano) are heading back into the barrio today to look at 5 more houses
and I am planning to mobilize students to help with moving all of the materials. There are
more than 30 homes that need some type of rebuilding and we need a lot more funds in order
to help these 30+
families. Many thanks to all who have donated and know that you are in our thoughts and
prayers.
Que Dios los bendiga!!! B
