Rotary Clubs of Libano Colombia, SA and Mission Viejo, Ca USA Strengthen Ties and Support for Barrio Building Program

Father Brian expresses his thanks to Rotary Club of Mission Viejo
for the club's generosity which has helped feed the many families in Libano and at the same time helped grow the Barrio Building Fund.

Father Brian also gave a very vivid report on not only the conditions in the Libano Barrios but also how the two clubs have worked together and in doing so have been a prime force in encouraging stability and growth in the Libano Club.

Father Brian made a special visit to the California USA Club to pay tribute to its members for their support but also to receive a check for $2200 earmarked for the Barrio Building Program.
This year, Father Brian was elected president of the Libano Rotary Club and will serve until June 30, 2003.

Dr Richard Frieder is shown presenting the check which was raised at a Rotary Club of Mission Viejo  auction for a Eye Laser Surgery Package donated by Dr Thomas Tooma and arranged by Dr Richard Frieder.

Dr Frieder, Past president of the Mission Viejo club and currently its director on International Service,
also donated part of a "People First" award bestowed upon him by President Carter at the American Optical Association Congress held in New Orleans on June 27, 2002. Dr Frieder's donation totaled $1250 and is  earmarked for the Barrio Building Fund.*

LAND PURCHASE FOR BARRIO SANTA ROSA PROJECT

Great News from Libano!!! We have finished purchasing the land in which we will be able to build the 32 homes for the invasion Barrio of Santa Rosa. Sometimes

patience pays off. Twice times we have been thwarted in our efforts to purchase a usable piece of property. The first time, the land was unstable and not suitable for

building. The second time an unscrupable character came in and upped the bid to a point where we could do nothing. (The final price he paid was $15,500). Finally, the

third time paid off for us as we purchased two side by side lots with room to build 32 homes and we paid an excellent price of only $8700. If the government subsidy works

out as usual, the cost is around $500 per home. If this is the case then we have already saved enough funds in order to build 14 homes with this deal. It certainly has

worked out to the benefit of this project.

We will begin to formulate the plans that we need to submit to the government for the housing subsidy and then to await their response. We may be only 18 homes

($9000) away from making this dream a reality. Many thanks to all of you for helping to make this happen.

ROTARY CLUB OF POONA DONATES $500.00 TO OUR BARRIO PROJECT

Dear President Bill, Greetings and best wishes for a very happy 2002 from members of RC of Poona.

At the outset , my sincere thanks to you for sending a a cheque for US $1000 for our cleft surgery project with PP Krishna Mathur of our club. We propse to utilize this fund to apply for a Matching grant after contributing additional $1000 between our cluband our district. I also want to thank PP George and PP Richard Frieder for the time spent with Krish towards evolving an action plan to institutionalize and elevate our Sister Club relationship.

I am also happy to enclose a cheque for $500 for your Barrio-Libano Project. We are really impressed with the magnitude of work involved and are happy that PP George Cooper’s son is there to do the needful.

Dr Pushpa Chandwani’s recent visit was an excellent start and we hope to receive many more Rotarians from your club in the near future. I have sent with Dr Pushpa the 12 point agenda, made out after detailed discussion by a group of Rotarians spearheaded by Krishna. Let us start the ball rolling on this important aspect of Rotary. We on our part, have formed a seperate sub-committee headed by Krish under the RFE (Rotary Friendship Exchane) ptogramme to iniate actions and take forward this agenda for implementation.

The availability of Bulletins on the internet is a welcome development and it will now become much easier to know each others activities.

Thank you once agai and with warm regards,

Yours in Rotary

February 21, 2002 Schooling and Feeding the Needy Children

Greetings to all from Libano, Colombia!!! We have been very busy these past few weeks here with registering the needy children for school. We ended up helping around 2000 children from some 700 families. The end total was a wonderful suprise and we were able to accomplish this through your generous help. We paid for the registration fees, for pens, pencils, notebooks, colored pencils, and clothing. Next week we will be organizing the supplemental lunch for close to 100 children. They will receive a vitamin filled lunch Monday through Friday. Two 4th grade students stopped by the house today and I asked them if they ate lunch today. They responded with their heads hung low, "No, there isn´'t anything in the house." We are planning to organize special invitation lunches over the school year for the 2000 children. It will only put a small band-aid on the problem, but it will be the very least that we can do. There are always so many needs and only so much we can do with the limited resources. Thank you for bringing a ray of hope into their lives and I truly believe that education is one of the key pieces.

FINANCIAL DISASTER FOR  NURSING HOME

At Rotary, we are waiting to do soil samples on the terrain and have been delayed due to all the rain. So we are working on helping out the Nursing Home which is in a financial disaster due to a cut in government funds. They were promised $35,000 which would cover 6 months and they have been told that they will not get the money. We are doing a fundraiser to help them out. It is a cocktail where the tickets cost $2.50 each. At least it will be something  to help them out.
